Snakes are a remarkably successful group of animals, found in a wide range of habitats and on almost every continent. There are about 2700 species in the world, ranging from the open sea to rivers, marshland, mountains and deserts, as well as forests and grasslands. Each has evolved a unique way of surviving in its environment. Martin Gaywood and Ian Spellerberg examine the origins and development of these instantly recognisable creatures, their role as predators and prey and their complicated relationship with humans.
